When Bernie Sanders announced his intention to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee on April 30, 2015, people thought he was crazy. Hillary Clinton had long been viewed as the unanimous Democratic choice.  She had the experience, the name recognition, and the funds.  But people wanted something more.  They wanted a future to believe in. And that’s what Bernie represents.  A revolution against a political and financial system that is rigged against the middle class.  Among his calls for change are a $15 minimum wage, free tuition at public colleges and universities, and Medicare for all.  To many, Bernie stands for equality, regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Those who hear his message come in thousands to see him.  His rallies are something to behold, full of pent up frustration at the current system, excitement at the prospect of change, and hope for the future.

With his grassroots campaign gaining momentum, Sanders has become a serious challenge to Clinton.  Once believed to be a crazy old socialist, Bernie has won 7 of the last 8 primaries.   With the Pennsylvania Democratic primary scheduled for April 26, Philly, too, has begun to “Feel the Bern.” However, there is a group that chants Bernie’s name like no other: young people.  In this demographic, Sanders holds a remarkable 74% to 23% edge over Clinton.   Many of the students at the University of Pennsylvania have thrown in their support for Bernie, collecting donations, selling Bernie fling tanks, and generating interest in this once unknown senator from Vermont.

Unfortunately for Sanders, showing support is one thing, actually voting is another.  Americans aged 18 to 24 are the most unreliable voters in the electorate.  In 2012, only 38% of young voters came out to the polls compared to the 57.5% overall turnout rate.  Many analysts believe the youth vote will fail Sanders as it has many other candidates.  Then again, maybe this year is the exception that makes the rule.  Maybe this year will be different.  Because Bernie’s not just a politician.  He’s one of us.
